政治是人类最基本的活动之一，由此派生而出单词再自然不过了。不过，作者也提到：

When we move into the realm of political terminolgy we are entering the land of lost words, for political words have been so abused and debased that they are almost without meaning.

candidate

来自拉丁词candidatus，最早的含义是“身穿白色衣服的人”。一位罗马的候选人出门竞选的时候，一定要保证身上的衣服洁白如新，也许这样可以给选民留下更深刻的印象吧！同样的派生词还有incandescent和candid。

conspirator

来自拉丁字根consipiro，“一起呼吸”。

parliament

来自法语parlez（说话）。所以parliament是说话的地方。parley（谈判）也来自同一字根。杰克船长也很喜欢说这句话的。

bicameral

两院制的。camera在中世纪拉丁文中意为“房间”。照相机之所以叫camera是因为最早的胶片照相机有一个暗室，用来给胶片曝光。

quorum

法定人数。直接来自拉丁文quorum（of whom）。常用的说法是Quorum vos unum esse volumus (of whom we will that you be one)，也就是说，提到的那个人被指定属于某个群组。
