根据记载，这本书是我在2009年2月15日托一小粒在卓越上买的。当时的情况应该是，需要凑单才能享受买XX免运费的优惠，所以我就买了这么一本书。

两天前（2021年2月15日），我从书架上拿出了这本尘封已久的书。那时，我基本完成了“任氏有无轩”的改写，《帝国与蛮族》又实在太大、太晦涩，一天看一章已经是我的极限。所以我需要用一本略微不那么晦涩，而自己又有兴趣的书来“中和”看太过艰深的书带来的疲乏。

于是冥冥之中似乎有着神奇的召唤，我拿出了这本书。

也许是因为自己语言能力还算可以，又翻译了若干本书的原因，所以对英语以及与此相关的学术类书籍特别感兴趣，也因此很乐意看这样的书。

在这样的书里，有一些亘古不变的东西。

当然，由于原著实在很厚，且成文时间极早（约在1950年），所以我不会全文翻译，只是做了一些有趣的摘录。
